I bet you’re thinking you know what program we’re going to talk about….

Adobe Illustrator? Nope.

Adobe Photoshop? Not on yer life.
Adobe InDesign? Hehe…not even close.

In fact, it’s not even an Adobe product at all.

This is a program that’s considered the workhorse in Jaime Buckley’s arsenal when it comes to eComic production.

It assists in the creation of the eComic, the development of promotional material, web content, optimizes all artwork, and can perform all the needed functions many artist rely on Photoshop for.

What is it?

PhotoImpact…a product of Ulead.

This single program is a lifesaver when it comes to the creation of WANTED:HERO. It performs effect art, such as beveled edges, visual effect, word manipulation, panting effects….not with layers (though it has that as well), but with a click of a button. No more working with Photoshop for 2 hours on an effect, when you can click a button to get the same results and move on.

Take a moment and check out this remarkable program. Not only is it amazing, it’s very affordable. It is the #1 art program, recommended by WANTED HERO STUDIOS, and Jaime Buckley himself.

So now you know.

  1. I can only draw the conclusion you don’t know how to use Photoshop to the full extend.
I have and know both these programs (they had Ulead Photoimpact as the weapon of choice at a publisher I used to work), and I’ve been on Photoshop since 5.5.
Ulead can’t touch Adobe when it comes to industry standards, efficiency, speed and shear usability.
Another thing is that the effects you are talking about is stuff you should avoid ore at least use very subtle if at all. They are usually a dead give away and makes your work look “photoshoped” and dated.

If you take some time and learn to use the selection tools and the action pallet you will see that Photoshop is unbeatable.
The action pallet, the scripting facility and the ability to set the programs up the way you prefer makes Photoshop the fastest gun in town.
And in collaboration with Image Ready it’s unbeatable for web too.
I use the whole suite, and can’t live without my Photoshop/Image Ready, Illustrator, In Design and Acrobat/Distiller.

Ulead is useless when you need to bring your pictures to print.
And Photoimpact does not manage to make high quality files as Adobe do with all its software.

P.S. I am not payed by ore employed at Adobe…..honestly! :-)

By the way, I find your blog absolutely fantastic and will from now on be a regular..and maybe we can quarrel about graphical software preferences from time to time LOL :-)

I have just started my first graphic novel project and first episode is nearly in the box…

  2. There was never a questions about Photoshop, nor about illustrator or the the suite—as I own and use he most recent suite myself. The questions was ease of use, and keep in mind friend, that the main group i talk to on a regular basis happens to be youth.

Just on that single point, there are two issues you should personally consider:
    1) Many young kids don’t have the money for such a program as Photoshop, which IS an industry standard as well as pricey…unless you can get your hands on a student version.

    2) With the lack of knowledge of either program, i will challenge, just from my personal experience, that you can learn PhotoImpact easier from out of the box, than Photoshop. This article, written years ago, was based on helping kids get results faster, for less money, so they can create projects and move forward.

That being said, I appreciate your comments, though I would have to disagree in certain areas, again, based on my personal experience—just as your comments are based on your experiences. Neither can be wrong, anymore than an argument between which two car brands are superior. If it works, it works. I use programs for what I need, you use programs for what you need.

I would, however, be careful about the comment about useless when it comes to print quality. I disagree completely. All my eComics have been done with these programs, including PhotoImpact, and I would NOT say my eComics were low quality according to any standard.

I will point out that the specialty of PhotoImpact is for the WEB. That I cannot deny, and anything I have created with my websites have been using that program.

The purpose of my lessons is always to give options. Surely you support options? There is no one way to do anything, and I was not downplaying Photoshop…I was pointing out something I found to work easier for making an eComic.

Again, I appreciate your comments and you are welcome on this site. However, be careful of absolutes…because you will always be wrong.

…all you can stand on is your opinion, just like my own.

  3. BTW, I checked out your site.

Looks like a very fun project! You readers should see another good example of what a motivated artist/creator can do when they have the tools and passion…
