Katulu–A powerful and beautiful Island People

On the planet of Humar there is a large race of island dwellers who live in harmony with nature, preferring the rough and challenging tropical climates of the sea, called the Katulu (strength of the sea). The current king (or tribal chief) of this people is known as “Molimau”. This was a very difficult entry to get, as until the last few generations, rumor had this people still engaged in cannibalism. I met with a native from the islands in the regions of Andilain who laughed deeply, informing me that this was an archaic belief and I should have no such worries.

When I arrived at the Island, it shocked both myself and my daughter Alhannah to find a warm and magnificent welcome—being hugged and laced with flowers (thankfully no herbs). I would call them a beautiful and strong people, valiant and family oriented, though their family structure seems strict, the men being dutifully obeyed. Alhannah spent much time with the fishermen, intrigued with their craft. She tells me these people are masters of the sea and fierce warriors of unequaled proportions. They live in tribes, from island to island, according to family bloodlines, but sharing a close bond to the sea, and always caring for the welfare of one another in times of need.

One of the most remarkable features, other than the immense size, strength and tanned skin, is the curious ‘body art’…which I was informed was anything but art. It is called ‘Topao’ (Body Runes). A mystical belief that words have power and when willed with a pure heart, those words can actually take shape. At least I believe that’s how it was described to me…the interpreter wasn’t clear on some of the meanings of the words.

I was given a demonstration. When spoken with focus, the ‘Topao’ comes to life in the form of the word inscribed on the skin. Objects, such as bows, swords, shields, even animals and more have been known to be manifested by those with he ability of ‘Topao’.

Only the ‘Bala’ (their version of a historian or ‘bard’) have mastered the more complex formulations of ‘Topao’.

These people are easy to love, though I am looking forward to a cooler climate and something more than coconuts and banana’s with fish.

  1. I’m curious about these people. What do they wear? What do they eat?

Can you provide more information on them Hobin? My family is from the Islands here and I’m interested in knowing more about these people and how we might be similar.
