Verdräskinn knew things about his world that mortals had not bothered to learn.
For centuries, we believed the Bane Plant bloomed only in spring.
For centuries, we were wrong.
And he simply... waited for someone to ask the right question.
Bane Plant
It grows in Kävedet, which is to say it grows in darkness.
In deep caverns carved from stone, in chambers where water drips constantly from ceiling to floor, where the air is thick with mineral-laden moisture.
This is not a place where plants thrive.
This is a place where Bane Plant thrives.
The common knowledge, passed down through generations of mortal herbalists and healers, was absolute: Bane Plant blooms only in spring. Only in spring can you harvest it. Only spring growth holds medicinal value.
This knowledge was so certain, so widely accepted, that nobody thought to question it.
Verdräskinn questioned it.
The dragon revealed what the Verrdrä have always known: Bane Plant grows year-round in Kävedet.
Not occasionally.
Not in unusual circumstances.
Year-round, constant, reliable as sunrise would be if sunrise existed underground.
The conditions that allow this are specific and unlikely. High moisture. Continuous mineral-rich water seeping through the cavern system. Darkness that most plants cannot survive.
Yet in these conditions, Bane Plant does not merely survive... it flourishes.
Young growth, tender and bright, can be harvested and used medicinally by humans. Its healing properties are potent: it accelerates wound closure, fights infection, restores vitality to weakened bodies.
Mortal herbalists knew this, though they only harvested spring growth and believed that was all that existed.
Mature growth, darker and more robust, cannot be used medicinally by humanoids.
But it makes excellent feed for animals.
Nutritious. Sustaining. Invaluable for livestock in a place where sunlight-dependent plants cannot reach.
What makes this discovery profound is not the plant itself, but what it reveals about how knowledge works.
The Verrdrä possess lore that spans millennia. They lived in Kävedet long before mortals knew it existed. They learned, through simple observation, that Bane Plant grows year-round.
They used it.
They built systems around it.
They never felt the need to broadcast this knowledge to the surface world.
We, meanwhile, developed entire systems of belief based on partial observation. Spring blooms, we saw. Therefore, spring-only blooms, we concluded.
We took our limitations as nature's law and never questioned whether we were simply not looking hard enough.
The lesson is humbling.
There are plants growing in unlikely places right now.
There are solutions to impossible problems thriving in environments we do not think to examine.
There are answers waiting in darkness, in mineral-rich water, in conditions we wrote off as hostile to life.
Verdräskinn knew this.
He simply waited for mortals to develop the curiosity to ask.
