The Greatest City Ever Created
While the world spins and nature rolls seasons in and out, nations plot against nations. This planet has vast lands, abundant resources and enough for all and to spare, yet wars continued to rage. Vallen against Human, Kutollum against Therrin, Tauku against Evolu...and caught up in their conflicts, few noticed the pitter-patter of tiny feet. Tiny feet who fled abuse and death, only to cast themselves upon the ocean, embracing a watery grave. Yet natural ingenuity prevailed, and if necessity is the mother of invention, she left these children at the breast for centuries. Marooned upon an uncharted island, the Gentre quarantined themselves, quietly learning, honing skills and utilizing available resources in ways never seen since the Creation. Hundreds became thousands and thousands grew to millions, developing technology to rival the fastest horse and deadliest trebuchet.
Trade is strictly forbidden outside city limits, with the exception of general knowledge (see: FAF) and punishable by life imprisonment or death. Before the Gate War Clockworks knew open trade of resources with other races, but never shared their technology. Besides the fact that gnome advancements are openly referred to as 'dark magic' and considered taboo by non-gnomes, there are two dominant reasons for withholding knowledge from others: REASON #1: Prevailing religious belief says that any gnome who shares technological advances with other races of their own free will and choice, would lose their immortal soul. Considering that the ultimate desire of every gnome is to take their place as a vital part within the great machine of life and under TGII's direct care, few gnomes would consider betraying their kind, and; REASON #2: The rest of the world didn't give a damn about Gentre when we had nothing, so why should gnomes give a rats nut if other races want what they have now? Gentre have the overall advantage in all facets of technology, save magic. Gnomes have no desire to lose that ground.
Clockworks City is a fully-functional and thriving metropolis, touting advanced technology through the encouragement of its citizens.
