Lapis of Nicodem is 6! That's right, on Oct 20, 2020, I published the first chapter in the serial. We're on Book 5 now.

Sorry for some of the radio silence. I've been working on getting some of my books on Amazon. I've been focusing on my writing.

So far I've got one of my miitary scinece fiction short story on my author's page (link below). One of my fictional military memoirs with some erotic moments is posted there as well. I also have a small pamphlet I made while I was an editor and member of the Northwest Independent Editor's Guild dealing with common firearm mistakes in fiction.

So I forgot to put "Re-Caast" in the announcement of the manuscript chapter. Oops. I'll do better next time! (yep, I'm used to the auto-sending of updates. I was flustered, trying to figure out where the "announcement" part was, I spaced it).
Otherwise, the improved set-up is great.
  ****
My week hasn't been as fruitful as I'd like; I've been working on a song for Wellspring Dragons and it just isn't coming along. D: Then I decided to do Spooktober and ended up staring at the computer screen as my mind tumbled over ideas about what to draw.
I know it will be art-based, just not what story I want to tell with the pics.
Sometimes creating isn't easy. At least I got a few Evenacht Snake's Den articles re-vamped with the new look.

Re-Caast Chapters 28 & 29 just dropped and vacation time!

Hey all, it's weekend reads time! My honey thought I should end on this cliffhanger, so blame him. It's a bit longer than my normal updates to make up for time off, so enjoy!   Chapter 28 and   Chapter 29   Lapis and company, hoping to track down LX70, get waylaid to help find Copper, a community guard who disappeared while helping street rats fortify their cubbies.
#sciencefantasy #darkfantasy   ****   So after this update, I'm on vacation! My honey is taking me to Japan for my birthday, so I'll be leaving next week and spending three weeks in the Land of the Rising Sun. That means I'll miss meeting Janet yet again, as she'll be in the LA area, but it is what it is.   As you may guess, there will be no serial updates, though I will still be working on my summer camp judging and the reading event. And I guarantee I'll be doing something for the prose event in September.   Windtwist Isles will return on Friday, September 18, Re-Caast on Friday, September 25. It will be good to have a break and recharge.   ****   Have a great rest of your summer, all!   Kwyn

The chase between the Smirnov twins on their M-9 Kestrels vs. Adi on her Ozymandias 6000 was one of my favorite scenes to write. It's a shame that the Smirnov's bikes were destroyed in the chase.

Re-Caast Chapter 25 just dropped! and SC update

Weekend reads!
  Ch 25
More than the wind executes a devastating blow to Lapis.

  #sciencefantasy #darkfantasy
  ****
I haven't completed an article yet for Summer Camp, though I've written several (and even re-written them when I didn't like the point of view). When they're done, I'll made additional posts. I can tell you that:
My much-loved celebrity is Drowned Dough, Pirate Captain and Entrepreneur, Founder of Merdia, the Ship-sinkingest City in the Evenacht.
I'm writing about Nevemere face paint used as a love language, and the mythic lovers Okune and Aiku, whose love story was written by the losers. Their love story will lead into the fictional tale that spawned conspiracy theories, because what do you think those on the losing end of a lover's tale do? Tell false tales?
And then there's Cavorting in the Earth Mother's Den. That's a fun one dealing with the scourge of infertility and what the wealthy do to combat it.
  ****
So after this, I'm getting right into catching up on the prompts before tomorrow. Will that happen? Eh, we'll see.
I'm taking time off starting at the end of August through the beginning of September. More on those dates later.
  ****
Have a wondrous Summer Camp, all

Re-Caast Ch 24 just dropped! and other news

Tis the weekend, so time for Re-Caast!   Ch 24   While it seems evil intent is catching up to the markweza and his scientists, bad luck is catching up to Lapis and company after they arrive in Ambercaast
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy   ****   I have half the Week 3 Summer Camp Prep done. I got sucked into the Wellspring Dragons redesign and 'screenshots' for the books. I'm going to bring most of the articles down sometime this next week, leaving up the landing page, the book page, and the category page with links to the few remaining articles, like the one I won an award for.   I'm also working on getting a playable map of the Glass Volcano done. It's going to be a huge project, but I'm excited about it. Like I don't have too much to do already in writing book 5!   ****   I'm off, and I hope your week is grand. Published chapter 11 finally. I managed to get the first draft done and got some time to edit it. Originally, I wasn't sure I was going to work on my manuscripts, but then I realized that the Hitchhiker's Guide is limited to 2,000 words which is too easy for me. My original draft stands at 12,000+ words.

Last month what little writing time I get was consumed by Adventure April which took longer than I expected. This month most of my writing time has been consumed by the Hitchhiker's Guide to Chendiuria.

I must start by apologizing that for the foreseeable future, I am not getting to work on my manuscripts as other writing has consumed what little writing time I get.

Last month it was Adventure April; this month it is the Hitchhiker's Guide to Augmented Valor that is consuming all my writing time.

I just started writing the guide and haven't edited it yet, so expect some mistakes and misspellings. If you look over what I have written so far, I would love some suggestions and/or creative criticism.

Creating a Hitchhiker’s Guide for the Augmented Valor universe requires a specific blend of bureaucratic dry wit, cosmic cynicism, and a healthy dose of "Don't Panic" (even when faced with Screamer-Vant Neuro-Gas).

Augmented Valor

Augmented Valor is a richly detailed cyberpunk-noir, hard science fiction, and post-apocalyptic universe blending military sci-fi, deep worldbuilding, advanced technology, AI, transhumanism, and interstellar adventure.

The break from writing my manuscripts has been helpful. I am taking the time to gather my very scattered notes from all of my paper binders, notebooks, stenographer's pads, etc. into Milanote.

My return to my manuscripts is uncertain, and I suspect few will miss them.

Re-Caast Chapter 19 just dropped!

Reading is good for the soul. Here's Chapter 19
Together forever, as the Wolf. Will Jilvayna answer Lapis and Midir's call?

  #darkfantasy #sciencefantasy
  ****
This chapter is pivotal for the storyline, and I spent a lot of time crafting it this week. It's about all I did. I had a lot to say, and it's heartfelt.
  ****
I wrote my Hitchhiker's Challenge article, it just needs art! I was lucky; Lorgan from my Evenacht serial writes these guides for Finders and the mini-Joyful, so he stepped up and took on the challenge :) Hopefully I can get the art done this week.
  ****
I don't really have a lot else this week. This chapter took up my time, my thoughts, and I wanted it to be perfect. It's close, I think. And my itch.io isn't quite done, either, but soon!

Re-Caast Chapters 16 & 17 just dropped!

Weekend reads on the horizon!
  Chapter 16 and Chapter 17
Second chances come in many forms.

  #darkfantasy ##sciencefantasy
  ****
So there's one particular paragraph in this week's chapters that made me cry when I wrote it. And I cried during editing. I pulled it from the heart, and I meant every word. I doubt others will have the same experience, but it will roll around in my emotions for a while yet.
  ****
Some days, I just sit down and draw as a way to escape. When I got half-done with this pic, it reminded me of something Path (Lapis of Nicodem khentauree character) would draw. So here it is, a portrait of the stern side of Sanna, Path-style.

  ****
I've been working on some long-promised pictures for both Lapis of Nicodem and Evenacht. When they'll be done, I'm not certain. Hopefully sometime in the near-er future.
I have to admit, though, creating landscapes in Unreal Engine is frustrating. "You've reach max memory" when I have like one tree in frame is going to haunt me. Maybe I just need to get better at doing concept-type landscapes.

I have an article in the top five of Strength and Honor for WAWA! If you haven't yet, check out Wolf Collaborate.

The Wolf Collaborate
Organization | Oct 8, 2026

The Wolf Collaborate is an alliance of individual Dentherion Empire rebellions, fourteen in total. While the peoples may not have much in common culturally, the hatred of Dentheria unifies them.

  ****
I've started a revamp of the Wellspring site and I've been working on the special artwork to celebrate serial milestones.
So did I get any of those done? Nope. My sketches turned out this guy, though, so I colored him in.

  ****
I've been reading through Lapis of Nicodem the first book in prep for an audio recording. I think I'm going to show myself reading, then have it fade to a pic, and post that to YouTube. I will make a complete audiobook of it, though I'm not sure where I'm going to sell it (not Audible).
I might try Bookfunnel. I plan to make special edition ebooks of all the serials with art, and an audio version would be a nice companion. Both would be sold on my website and through Draft2Digital. I also need to get my Fourth Wall site up, but it's strange. I'm terrified of making it live. I've hesitated for a long time, and I'm not certain what can push me into making it active.
I can take the plunge with books. But with my art? Yeah..nope.

I hope your weekend is not as hot as here in the LA area. We're roasting!

Re-Caast Chapters 13 & 14 just dropped!

Time for a weekend read! Chapter 13 and Chapter 14   Lapis and Patch rush to save the ex-rebels from a tech-laden enemy
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy   ****   Heh, thought I had published both chapters, and only 14 showed up! Guess that's the day it's been. I had to get up at 3:30 AM to drive my honey to the train station so he could get to the airport. I'm kinda fuzzy right now.   ****   It's a bit strange, writing about Lapis and the end of an empire, since I live in California. I keep thinking about how I never thought I'd live through something similar when I started this serial. How things have changed in five years.   I keep writing, because it's what I have. I keep drawing. I'm planning on opening a Fourth Wall store sometime in the next few months, and to offer paperbacks of my Wellspring books through Bookvault (and maybe of my serials). And I wonder, if I really have a future where all that will happen.   ****   I think I'm going to make more coffee and veg. I need a little break from my contemplations.   Kwyn

Re-Caast Ch 11 is now Live!

Time for some World Anvil Manuscript reading!
  It's waiting! Chapter 11
Lapis and Patch visit Meinrad's mansion, carrying little faith in his and Rambart's good intentions.

  #darkfantasy #sciencefantasy
  ****
I've been updating articles and art for Lapis of Nicodem so I can submit the site to WAWA. One of them is a pic of Patch, where I now wanted a darker, moodier look.
I wanted to highlight how my rendering style has changed over the years. I was so inspired by BotW that I started simplifying my lights and shadows in 2017. I colored that way for several years, but drifted back to my previous style around 2023 or so.
Due to writing about ghosts (and therefore drawing them), I'm getting accustomed to drawing silhouettes. That's a huge change from line drawing, since I'm blacking out a space then using an eraser to form the outline. Trying new things as I go along is awesome.
  Anyway, here's the side-by-side.

Re-Caast Chapters and Bendebares are Live!

Re-caast returns with Chapter 9 and Chapter 10.
Lapis and Patch report on their nightly adventure before she has a chat with the rats about what to expect during Midir's big speech about Jilvayna's future.

  #darkfantasy #sciencefantasy
  ****
Yes, it's a two-fer this week! Evenacht: Bendebares is now live!
Vantra has one more task to complete before the mini-Joyful heads for the Windtwist Isles: she must help Navosh clear the remnants of Kjiven's Touch from the Bendebares, the heart of the Labyrinth.
The heart, however, has fallen to another, darker influence.

FYI: Bendebares is not a stand-alone novella. It will make much more sense if you have already read Greenglimmer. I initially wanted the events to begin Windtwist Isles, but I decided that most of Windtwists should happen in the Windtwists. And so Bendebares was born.
(Plus, when it grew past 10K, it seemed appropriate to have it as a separate work.)
  ****
I've decided to submit Lapis of Nicodem into the Best World category, as long as I can update the Re-caast Manuscript while it's being judged. I guess I should ask, eh?

Time for a new chapter of Re-Caast!

I reached 25K for WorldEmber! Not all have artwork, and I haven't got Fyrij's Day up and I really need to, but hey! I still have a day or so!
That's me, last minute WorldEmber creator, despite promising myself I'd get it done early.
  Anyway, check out my articles!

I also have to rush and get the cover and maps done for Windtwist Isles before the serial launches Jan 9. I maybe should have taken a bit more time after WorldEmebr to get all that done. All well.

And with that, I'm off to rush-finish my WorldEmber!
  Have fun doing the same!

Re-Caast Ch 7 is Live and WorldEmber!

Take a break from WorldEmber and read the new Re-Caast chapter; it's the last one before I go on break! The chapter's a little short, but it wanted to end where it ended, so *shrug*.   There is something strange about the unknown khentauree Lapis, Patch and Jhor are tracking.
#sciencefantasy #darkfantasy   ****   I'm taking a break from the serials until Jan 2, when the next Re-Caast chapter drops. Windtwist Isles, the next Evenacht book, will start on Jan 9.   Am I really taking a break, or just focusing on WorldEmber? Hahahaha yeah, WE for the win.   I have my first article *almost* done. I didn't quite get the artwork finished, so placeholder art is sitting pretty. It's about Clear Rays, a powerful spell Vantra uses in the Evenacht. This one article has me at 21% of WE finished. Heh, I guess 10K will fly by.
Clear Rays
Physical / Metaphysical Law | Jul 8, 2026
I'm also working on Fyrij's Day. Haven't decided if it will be a character or a prose article. I'm doing a text/art combo, inspired by what I did for Spooktober. Here's a peek at the art. Yep, Kjaelle is not happy with our death-faking little caroling.
#worldember   ****   That's about all for now, all. Have a great WorldEmber! I'm looking forward to reading lots of great stuff!   Kwyn

Re-Caast Chapter 6 is Live! and Other Updates

Time for some weekend reading! Chapter 6 is ready when you are.
While escaping from the tech battle, Lapis and company find evidence the unknown mercs are tracking someone else.
  #darkfantasy #sciencefantasy
  ****
So I've been thinking of Greenglimmer. It's not that I ended the book too soon, because I felt that it needed to finish at that point. But I decided I don't want to start Windtwist Islands with an extended Greenglimmer adventure.
So I'll be publishing an intermediate story about clearing Kjiven's Touch from the sacred Bendebares grove. It'll be along a novelette, or even novella, size, and go live sometime between now and January 9. Not sure when (cause I'm still writing it!).
  ****
I've been on the fence about this, but I think I'll be taking down most of my Wellspring Dragons articles, then slowly putting them back up when I get around to restyling them. I'd like a unified look, and since all the newer stuff is in the revamped style, I'll still have stuff up for people to read.
  ****
  That's it for this week!

Red Dragons Tong

I've been busily adding my cyberpunk noir science fiction world here on WA. The Red Dragons are the largest criminal syndicate on Chendiuria. Aditi "Adi" Nizhóní Peshlakai , my former Colonial Fleet Marine Myrmidon MC, has delt with the Red Dragons in the past.

I'm looking forward to WorldEmber 2025 and plan to focus on geography. I've got quite a list of articles I want to write.

I'm doing really well with NovelEmber. I am currently at 31,742 words, and I am contemplating perhaps increasing the challenge to 100k words if I can figure out how to do that on PWA.

For the foreseeable future, I am posting a chapter each Sunday. I am alternating between two stories set in my Augmented Valor world. One story features Adi and Shadows of Eros; the other story takes place about 70 years before Adi's time.

Is this giving me a chance to work on World Ember (and take a vacation) without worrying about a chapter update? Um, yes. I've done chapter updates before while on vacation, but that's not a good way to rejuvenate. I need a break, before I get overwhelmed and uncreative.

Re-caast Chapter 3 is Live and Other Updates!

Time for your weekend read! Chapter 3 is ready.   After suffering through surprise visitors to the rebel House, another, more alarming one awaits Lapis and company.
#sciencefantasy #darkfantasy   ****   Lapis of Nicodem turned 5 on Oct 20th! *cheers* *whistles* *claps*   Yep, I've been writing about Lapis and her assortment of friends, family and enemies for five years. It doesn't seem that long, but I've serialized four books at Manuscripts and just started Re-caast, the fifth. This journey into serialized fantasy would not have taken place without World Anvil. Thank you for giving me a writing home.   I'm hoping, barring more unforeseen wtf, to get some nice artwork up in the next few months, and maybe a story or two. There are a couple I have in mind, I just need time to create it all.   And I might have some free time coming up because...   Greenglimmer is ending next week! That's right, the second book of the Evenacht serialized novels is coming to an end. But never fear! Book 3, Windtwist Isles, will go live January 9, 2026, same bi-weekly time, and free to read at Manuscripts.   More adventure and mayhem await Vantra and the mini-Joyful as they arrive in the Windtwist Isles, which are as much known for their harsh, unpredictable winds as their sparkling sandy beaches. Laken's next essence is there--at the bottom of a gigantic ocean whirlpool. How are they going to reach it without being torn apart? Can they retrieve it before the enemy does?   ****   While I really need to get the covers done for the new editions of Wellspring, tonight is a Katamari night! OMG I'm so excited to play the new game! I LOOOOOOVVVVEEEEE Katamari and I am so ready to roll up the past and make stars.   I hope you have as exciting a weekend planned,   Kwyn

#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy   ****   My new pen display arrived and is working, so my trouble was with the old one failing. Fun times, trying to figure all this out :/   I've been working on the cover of Abyss of Dreams now that I can. It's not quite done yet, but you can see the placeholder on the Wellspring site. I need to get the map done ASAP, too. I've fallen behind, and rushing to catch up has been hard. My honey says I should be kind to myself, my deadlines are my own, and I know this. Still...having a dark fantasy book coming out in Oct is timely.   ****   Evenacht Snake's Den is almost to 300K chapter reads! Let's go, y'all!   ****   OK, back to the frantic rush!   Kwyn

Broken Dulcet Chs 61-Epilogue are Live! and I've Almost Reached Gold!

Tis the end of Broken Dulcet! We have 3 chapters this week, to wrap things up. Take a bit of time this weekend and read Chapter 61,   Chapter 62 and Epilogue.   Lapis has no idea what to feel, now that the Dentherion Empire's influence in Jilvayna has come to an abrupt end. Midir also has an offer she cannot refuse.
It's been a ride, all! Here ends the Jilvayna Chronicles arc of Lapis of Nicodem. We'll start Re-cast, the first book in the Chaser Chronicles, sometime in September. Lapis and Patch join the new government, the Wolf Collaborate, as chasers, and their stakes will be those who escaped justice for the ills they wrought on Jilvayna, as well as discovering what, exactly, Mesaalle Kez wants.   And, as with all chapters of this serial, the next book will continue to be FREE to read here at Manuscripts, our wonderful World Anvil writing platform.   #sciencefantasy #epicfantasy   ****   I have three more articles to write today to reach gold. Broken Dulcet Ch 59 n 60 are Live! and Summer Camp Updates

We're almost to the end of Broken Dulcet! Check out Chapter 59 and   Chapter 60.   Empires fall, and revenge is not as sweet as Lapis thought it would be.   #sciencefantasy   ****   Wow, y'all! After the next installment, Broken Dulcet is done--but Lapis's adventures are not over. They continue in Re-cast, where a chaser's job is never done, especially in service to a new leadership rising from the ashes of the old.   I didn't think it would be this quick, but the characters had other ideas :) Expect Re-cast to start sometime in September, giving me a chance to get the cover and such done (I mean, I'm in the middle of Summer Camp, then I'll be judging, and I have a WIP coming out in October. I need a bit of time!).   Thanks to all the readers of Lapis's adventures so far. Because of you, I continue to write. Seriously. I know there are people out there who enjoy her story, and that keeps me going through all my creative endeavors.   ****   I don't have my page updated, but here are a couple of articles I've been working on for Summer Camp. Broken Dulcet Ch 57 & 58 are Live, and Other Updates

Reading Broken Dulcet is free here at Manuscripts, so why not check out Chapter 57 and   Chapter 58   Lapis and company rush to the rescue, and hit Mimstone Square in the Lells just in time for fireworks.   #darkfantasy #sciencefantasy   ****   Broken Dulcet has maybe 3 more chapters before it's done. Then we'll be on to the Chaser Chronicles, which follows Lapis and company as they navigate a life after the fall of the Dentherion Empire. It'll run here at World Anvil Manuscripts, same time, same publishing schedule. And yes, it'll be free to read as well!   ****   How's everyone's summer camp going? I've written articles, but they need a bit of CSS before publishing. So far I have something on Qira's Stink Smell, the Meint Clinics, and the city of Evening, with plans to write about Flame martial artists who were also dragonpriests, Rakan noodles, and a haunted building. There are a few prompts this time I'm like ¯\(o_o)/¯ but I'll come up with something (symbiotic relationship, eh?).   I hope I can get my CSS on and publish something before tomorrow, but I always get behind during Summer Camp and rush in the last week to get articles completed.   I've decided to dedicate this Summer Camp to my father, who is slowly slipping away and may not make it past July (we'll see). It's a mixed bag of feelings, and we'll see how much of that makes it into my articles (it's definitely made it into my serials).   ****   See you tomorrow for Week 2's reveals!   Kwyn

Broken Dulcet is nearing its end! I don't have an exact date for the final chapter for Broken Dulcet, but it'll be before the end of summer.
Then on to the next big story arc in the series. Re-cast (working title) begins The Chaser Chronicles, where Lapis gets to chase bigger stakes for a bigger cause.
I'll probably redesign the first four book covers too, but that will happen after I get more promised artwork out there.

I've no new artwork for this week. I've been trying to get Abyss of Dreams cover done. It's been hard, because I want something that looks current so it will sell, but after looking at popular releases, I'm still not sure what that might be (especially since it's epic dark fantasy, and not romantasy). I'm probably going to go with a sweeping landscape with tiny figures, coinciding with the epicness of the plot.
And I'm now enchanted with the possibility of using Gaea for map purposes. We'll see if I stick to my original idea, or go with that.

  Have a great week, all!

So it looks like Broken Dulcet will be ending sooner than I thought! There's just a few more chapters left! I'll take at least a month off (maybe two, since Abyss of Dreams is dropping in October), and then Re-cast (working title) will begin.
Same release schedule, bi-weekly on Fridays by 2:00 PM PST, same place here at World Anvil Manuscripts!
Re-cast marks the beginning of The Chaser Chronicles, where Lapis gets caught up in even more adventure and intrigue. I don't want to say too much yet, because I'm not going to spoil Broken Dulcet's ending.

Lapis and company need to get out of the cave before it, and the cliffside, collapses.

I've realized my writing, at this point, is carrying my hope with it. Life might seem futile, but if one gives up, that ensures defeat. I'm not giving up. Neither are my characters, even if things go wrong and it seems hopeless, which is where Lapis is at right now.
Broken Dulcet is getting on towards the end. Then the Jilvayna Chronicles arc will switch to The Chaser Chronicles arc. It will continue to follow Lapis's story as she carries out more dangerous stakes, trying to find answers to questions about Mesaalle Kez and Danaea, among others. And what of Gedaavik and the khentauree? Stay tuned!
You know what's also coming up? Greenglimmer's finale and the release of Abyss of Dreams. And Summer Camp. It's not summer without Summer Camp!

My father was supposed to have a quick procedure done earlier this week. Instead the surgery went wrong. While it didn't go as wrong as the doctors originally thought, he's still not in great shape. Worry made being creative a struggle. I finished the chapter (yay!), but it changed a lot from what I had in mind because I realized I couldn't write it that way.
Yeah, it's interesting how things outside artistic and writing processes can drastically influence them. Because of that, I don't have much more to add than my Rituals of Renewal article. I had planned a bit more, but that will need to wait for a later update.

Broken Dulcet Ch 50 is Live!

Check out Ch 50 here.   Rescuing Faelan and company, and then escaping the palace, was never going to be easy.
#DarkFantasy #ScienceFantasy #SciFi   ****   Rushing to catch up on all the art stuff I need to get done this month. Here's a peek at what I've been working on for the Abyss of Dreams release. It's a composite of several snowy mountain photos and three different skies, and while I like the dreamlike quality, I'm not quite happy with it. The left peak is Kiune, the right Majari, and deep within the earth below them rests a dragon's lair. I'm creating quotes and working on the map (which is not going as easy as I wish it would).
****   I'm looking for heightmap/terrain generator software. I'm not as concerned about price as I am about quality (though I can't afford something like Houdini. I keep thinking 2D art apps are spendy but 3D has them beat). I've read about several, including Gaea, Blender, Terragen, World Machine, World Creator, etc etc. Anyone have a program they use and like?   ****   Other than that, I've been wondering how I'm going to handle both Greenglimmer and Broken Dulcet coming to an end at the same time I'm releasing Abyss of Dreams. It looks like that's what's going to happen. I had planned to take a month break between the end of the books and the beginning of the next, but I might have to extend that. We'll see how this all turns out, because pantser me doesn't know.   Have a great week, all!   Kwyn

There's not much to report on this week, other than my editing of Abyss of Dreams is progressing. Publishing is still months away, but I'm terrified I'm not going to get everything done.
I'm also a little concerned. I was planning to do a paperback through Amazon, but the quality is not where it should be. It seems more and more authors I know are getting proofs or author copies from them that are water damaged/torn/bent/ etc. Then there was the incident where an author got her author copies and while the books had her cover, the interior was Mein Kampf. Broken Dulcet Ch 44 & 45 are Live and Other Updates

'Tis time for more Broken Dulcet! Read Ch 44 here and   Ch 45 here.   Janks are overrunning the Lells, causing problems for Lapis and Patch.
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy   ****   Last Sunday I was helping my honey cut down a tree our HOA hated, but that we and our neighbor had no problem with (they liked the shade, and the HOA said they didn't care). Carting branches tore my rotator cuff on my right arm--the arm I use to draw. It's been a week filled with pain, ice packs and heating pads (I'm allergic to ibuprofen, so the usual ways to get swelling to go down are not viable for me).   Beginning to think 2025 doesn't like me very much.   Anyway, special artworks and the like are on hold until I'm healed.   I'll be publishing Greenglimmer next week as usual (Jan 24), then I'm flying to the far reaches of Star Valley, Wyoming, USA to visit my dad, who's in ill health. Internet access will be iffy, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to publish Broken Dulcet while I'm there; my family prefers the middle of nowhere. I grew up in the Narrows, an unincorporated area, and in Bedford (which had ~250 people back then, most belonging to 3 families).
I'll be flying into Salt Lake, then driving 3 1/2 hours to reach my brother's place. I'm out of practice driving on crappy roads, so not looking forward to that. It'll be strange to visit; I haven't been back since my early twenties. I found it soul-killing. While the landscape is beautiful (it's south of Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park, so has the same kind of alpine mountain scape), the people are not. I'll be happy to sit and keep Dad company, then flee back to a better place.

Holiday posting: Greenglimmer will go live on the 13, Broken Dulcet on the 20, then break. Greenglimmer will be back on Jan 10, Broken Dulcet on Jan 17. Man, I always get nervous about taking breaks, but of course, I'll be working on WorldEmber, so it won't be as much of one as you might think.
  ****
I've written three articles for WorldEmber, but they're not quite done yet, so I'll share them later. They're about the e ada sindo from the Wellspring Dragons, a martial order of women in Rakan whose purpose is to bring justice to those who don't get it from official sources. Their failure to follow this tradition is an important part of the fourth book WIP, and will lead to unexpected consequences in book five.
Starting December 12, Wellspring Dragons Books 1-3 will be available for free through the Smashwords store. Check them out before Book 4 drops Summer 2025!
  ****
I'm at 996K total views for my World Anvil Account. Will I make 1M before the new year? We shall see!
Ambercaast is also at 198K views! Will it make 200K before the new year? We shall see!
It will be a nice New Year if both happen :)

Have a wonderful start to the holiday season, all!

Well, I spent a lot of this week on my Evenacht primer (and the rest editing my WIP), so most of Week 3's homework for WorldEmber isn't done yet. Here's a link to what I have finished so far.
I'm hoping to have it all done by the end of the weekend. I always promise I won't get behind, and as I'm falling further and further back, I wonder why my good intentions never seem to work. I always rush at the end.
  ****
My honey thinks I need to take more frequent breaks, so I'll be taking one at the end of December around Christmas. Looking forward, I want to put in two-week breaks four times a year, and a month between the end of a book and the beginning of the next one. Creative juices get ground down, and I think a healthier break schedule might help in this.

That's it for this week. Take care, all!

Broken Dulcet Ch 37 is Live!

After avoiding the janks and their allies, Lapis arrives at the House carrying gifts.

I don't have extras. I'm not in the a good headspace right now. It was hard to write a chapter meant to be soft and wonderful when seething rage and helplessness roared through me.
My honey and I grew up in rural America (Wyoming and Nebraska) and we know what's in store when Trump gets sworn in and they implement Project 2025. We know the hate that's been unleashed, and the numbers of people getting hurt and dying needlessly will increase. I'm donating to orgs like RAICES and the Trevor Project and the ACLU and hope we can keep the damage and death to a minimum, though right now, it feels pretty hopeless. I know how unsafe I feel as a woman. It's worse for LGBTQ+, minorities, non-Christians.
And no, I'm not overreacting. We know the kind of person who voted for Trump because we're related to them. My honey and I moved to California and cut all ties to toxic, abusive family. There isn't anywhere else to move to escape the hate that infuses them (my father told me during the pandemic he didn't care if I lived or died, all the same to him. And now people like him, who lack empathy, sympathy and basic human decency, will be back in power).
Y'all, take care. I'm going to have to, before I burst.

So I have my Spooktober article written. It's more dark than scary, but it fits. It still needs prettifying, and I still need to make the snippets for the prompts, but it's good for a read.
The Final Gauntlet is the trial Qira undertakes in the (NEW!) short story Falling Light. It's the final test for a Light-blessed, and if they succeed, they become the avatar of Light. That means, of course, it's a difficult and dangerous undertaking.

If you didn't catch it earlier, Oct. 20 was the 4th anniversary of Lapis of Nicodem! The first chapter of Lapis was the first ever serial chapter I'd written, so it was a milestone even in 2020.
Hopefully this gets me pumped to draw that portrait of Rin I've been meaning to create for the website. And maybe I'll get a khentauree drawn, too (I am not as good at combining horse/deer bodies with humanoid torsos as I am drawing portraits. They look funny).

New Short Story and a Book Anniversary!

So, my weekend went something like this: internet was funky so it took me thirty minutes to upload my Greenglimmer chapters on Friday. Had problems uploading the short story I planned to release along with the chapters, so waited until things seemed better.
Then my coffee decided it liked being inside my gaming keyboard rather than inside the mug. Eep. And since that was my desktop keyboard, I needed to do what I could to clean it and get another hooked up...fun times, y'all!
But I did get the short story up! Check it out here. It's relevant to the current happenings in my Evenacht serial. It's dark and moody, and is Qira's origin story.
Qira vowed to destroy the Light Temple, but he needs the Light Crown to do it--which means he needs to defeat Skerezahn the Immortal first.

Today is the 4th anniversary of Lapis of Nicodem--which just happens to be the 4th anniversary of the first serial chapter I ever published!
Doesn't feel like it's been four years, either. But it has, and the 4th book is still going strong!

Well, I was all set to publish my Falling Light short story along with this week's LoN chapter, and I realized I didn't have a cover. Oops. Too used to publishing chapters, I guess. So that will go up as soon as I make a cover.
Thanks to all who read my stuff! I have over 900K page views for my account! What am I going to do when I reach 1M? Not sure, but something. World Anvil's been a wonderful place to house my creative endeavors, and I want to celebrate that.

My week's been mostly working on ads for my three series. Here's the new one for Wellspring Dragons (Book 4 is surging ahead, finally! Maybe maybe I'll have it ready for release at the beginning of summer).

My week was mostly spent on my challenge entry, and crying because something was wrong with the article and I couldn't figure out what. I saved the writing to a test article, deleted everything, and went from there.
I've officially started the 2nd edition edits of Ambercaast, which will basically consist of spellchecking again and breaking chapters into smaller chunks (my opinion on long chapters for serials has changed since I first started Ambercaast). Not certain when I'll get it done, since I also need to finish Abyss of Dreams, my Wellspring WIP that really, really needs to get finished.

I've continued working on the revamp of Lapis of Nicodem, which has included re-coloring older artwork. The originals I did in 2020-21 are influenced by Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's artwork; I loved the cel-shading, with highlights and shadows and not much in between. While I still love the style, I'm going back to a less minimal look for my own work.
Speaking of influences, I think my characters' eyes will forever be large, because I first studied Wendy Pini's art and, of course, most of her characters are elves with large eyes.

I am now on vacation for two weeks (except for reading the SC articles for the prompt I sponsored. I'm still doing that!). Greenglimmer will return on Sept 6, and Broken Dulcet will return on Sept 13. Maybe I should have waited and wrote about the spooky theater then. Ah well.
I haven't taken a break since Nov-Dec of 2023, when I took a month off before Greenglimmer and Broken Dulcet began. But after writing 50K during Summer Camp (counting articles and serial chapters but not CSS code) I am in need of a breather. So breathe I shall.
I will not be taking bets on how many days I can stay idle before I pick up a pen and make some digital art, or type a bit on my Wellspring WIP. I have too much of a guilty conscience. I'll probably put up my revamp of my Lapis of Nicodem homepage, but I won't do that until after SC judging because I'm terrified I'll accidentally update articles.
Who knows. Maybe I'll just kick back and play some more Tears of the Kingdom (my honey got me the 9 disc, full soundtrack to the game in Japan. Very excited to listen to it all). Or maybe I'll play around with Medieval sampler from Teenage Engineering. It's my early birthday present, and since it has samples of medieval instruments (and a dragon!) it's right up my alley.

So I've got 27/32 prompts done. My goal was gold, so I have that! I'm going to focus and get the last five done before tomorrow. It will happen: two are written and need art, and if I keep the last three under 1000K, I should be good. I've never hit diamond before, so this will be a first!
I'm proud of my articles. They've risen naturally from the prompts and my world settings. Some are things I should have written about before, so this has been a great opportunity to get them down.

  ****
After summer camp, I'm planning to focus on
1) getting all my worlds updated with their new themes. Yes, I still haven't settled for one for Lapis of Nicodem, but hey, we'll see what I come up with
2) get the fourth book of Wellsprings Dragons finished
3) judge my entries! There are 212 so far, but I'm not certain how many of them have Challenge turned on. Regardless, I will have a lot of reading this month
4) I really should take a break this month. I need one. Will it happen? ...maybe

I don't have my Summer Camp Week 1 prep done yet because I'm working on my meta (my meta has spoilers so it's not available to the public. I'm making meta/primers that don't have them, and that's taking time).
Themes of change? Well, Broken Dulcet's "first night of the last night of the Dentherion Empire" definitely fits! The ending of an empire brings a lot of change, good and bad, with it.
I also am looking at Evenacht. A really big event is on the horizon, and I'm pretty certain it's going to happen in July--and it will change Vantra's viewpoint on a great many things.
Change in the real world has influenced my writing. Without the rise of generative AI and LLMs, I wouldn't be thinking of khentauree in the same way. What constitutes intelligence, and do they qualify? If Gedaavik's code changed them, did it change them enough to give them humanity? Or are they just following what an extraordinary code tells them to do?
  ****
Alright, I will go work on my meta/primer so I can get my homework posted.
  Take care, all

I think I should write a scene where pollen attacks the main characters, because it sure can knock you flat and leave your head feeling three sizes too big for days. Is there a B-rate horror movie called Attack of the Pollen? There should be.
  That's basically been my week.
I was going to start recording again (hahaha stuffy narrator is a no-go), influenced by fellow Anvilite MJ Keeler reading her book Blackbird Raven Crow and putting the chapters up on YouTube. I've been looking for a not-as-exploitative place to plunk my own recordings (not Audible or Spotify), and YouTube is as good as any (will probably try Bandcamp as well). I will aim to post something once a week, if I can get my energy back. I'm feeling swamped, like I have too much to do right now.
I hate planning things, then having life get in the way and crushing said plans into pulp. Fingers crossed I can get the artwork for Knavish Canto up soon.
  ****
I should have the rewrite of my Wellspring WIP done soon (I'm planning by the end of the month). Once I gave up on including all things from the previous version, the writing's gone smoother. Those scenes that didn't make it into the Abyss of Dreams will be in the next book (where, after the changes in book 3, they work better). There are times, this stuff is just hard.
And I found out that I have potential readers that are waiting for paperbacks of my series because they prefer that format to ebooks. Considering the cost of physical books right now, that surprised me. Maybe they won't be as enthusiastic when they realize how much I'll have to charge for those, just to get a dollar or two in profit.

#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy #scifi   ****   I have done about 10K words on the Abyss of Dreams re-write this week (and deleted about the same). If you want to know where my time has gone, it's been into that. Will I make my Oct deadline? I hope, I hope.   I've also been enjoying Dragon's Dogma 2, and been disappointed in Endless Ocean. I loved the first two games, and how intimate, beautiful, and wondrous they were. This one is not that :(. There's something special about getting an up-close pic of a fish to file, that a long-shot scan that grabs a whole bunch of IDs misses. And the AI voice is awful. *sad tears*   ****   And I'm off, to continue work on the 4th Wellspring Book and working on Knavish Canto's hitting 100K views art.   Take care, all

Broken Dulcet Ch 16 & 17 is Live!

Read Chapter 16 here.   Read Chapter 17 here.   Based on info from Danaea's decoded notes, Lapis embarks on a rebel chase.
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy #sciencefiction   ****   What have I been doing this week? Re-linking my World Anvil images to my CSS code so they don't break upon server transfer. Yeah, this has taken a lot of time. Have I missed some? I bet I have. Fun times ahead, but since I'm revamping the book sites anyway, it's fine. I'll just say 'under construction' and call it good.   I also got a shiny new desktop that should speed up art/video/3D creation *fingers crossed*. I spent two days grumbling about how much I hate installing all my apps on a new machine. Some companies make this difficult because they want you to buy another license, rather than keep the current one (DaVinci Resolve, ClipStudioPaint). Frustration is not what I want to feel upon getting a shiny new desktop.   ****   What am I stoked for this week? The new Endless Ocean game. I loved the first two because I got to take pics of sealife and plants and coral. And I'll be happy when A Thousand Year Door revamp makes it to the Switch.   I was also reminded this week about how US marines duped an AI meant to track human movement by hiding under a cardboard box Solid Snake style and creeping up on it. It's not just in video games, y'all!   ****   Have a great week!   Kwyn

dark2.jpg

  ****
I plan to write a short story for Adventure April. I still haven't decided what yet, and the month's nearly half over! Think think think...
So a lot of work on my art/videos have slowed to a crawl because Adobe products are complaining I don't have enough cache available to run them (this is before I even open a file). I cleared space over the amounts I chose in the settings, and they still complain. So it's been a back-and-forth between other apps, which, again, kinda slows down work. There are other annoyances with my desktop, like constant game crashes, so I'm wondering if there's something amiss with the computer. I know some more recent Windows updates haven't been kind to certain PCs, but reinstalling previous updates hasn't changed things. And yes, I pay for a virus etc checker to keep my comp clean.
So creating the covers for the paperback versions of my Wellspring Dragons has not gone as planned. I'm taking the "all things in time" approach. It all will happen when it happens.

I hope you all have the greatest week and take care!
